University of Greenwich Advances to Next Stage of Apprenticeship Programme
Earlier this year, the University of Greenwich was awarded funding for degree apprenticeships by the Office of Students (OfS). The funding is for the delivery high quality degree (Level 6) apprenticeships to under-represented groups in higher education.
Work is now beginning to grow the network of employers needed to recruit more apprentices for programmes in the health, construction and engineering sectors.
Developing demand-sensitive courses such as apprenticeships is a key part of the university’s 2030 Strategy.
Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with studying. Apprentices will:
- Be an employee who earns a wage and gets holiday pay and other employee benefits
- Work with experienced staff
- Gain specific skills
- Get protected time for studying and training during their normal working week.
Professor Jane Harrington, Vice Chancellor and CEO of the University of Greenwich said:
‘We were delighted to have been successful in our bid. We are always looking at ways to improve our offering to not only widen access to higher education but also to provide much-needed skills for the future and I am pleased to see the project progressing.’
The University of Greenwich was one of only three (out of a total of 32) institutions to receive over £1 million in funding, the second most funding in total.
