UrFU Establishes Groundbreaking Dissertation Council for Architectural Studies in the Urals

The first meeting of the UrFU Dissertation Council was held to defend dissertations for the degree of Candidate of Architecture. Notably, there were only three such councils in the country: Moscow, Kazan, and Nizhny Novgorod. Now there is another one in Ekaterinburg.

The PhD students needed such a council, and the opportunity to create it came when three PhDs in architecture were admitted to the UFU department. Now the council has 12 members. The last defense of a PhD in architecture took place in Ekaterinburg 20 years ago.

On the agenda was the defense of Arina Leizerova’s PhD thesis “Architectural Aspects of Sustainability of Structural Elements of the Historic City Center (on the example of Ekaterinburg)”. The work was highly appreciated by the opponents and members of the council. Leizerova proposed a theoretical model of isolated closed architectural and urban composite formations for the preservation of cultural heritage objects and as a preventive measure for territories that are not cultural heritage objects.

The opening of the Dissertation Council will increase the number of scientific publications in journals indexed in international citation-analytical databases and journals included in the list of peer-reviewed scientific publications of the Russian Federation. The number of publications will increase by 15-20 per year.

“The creation of the council will increase the reputation of the university, promote academic and scientific cooperation and attract applicants to the postgraduate program of UrFU”, says Irina Maltseva, Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture and Scientific Secretary of the Dissertation Council for Architecture.

Besides, the creation of the Dissertation Council will attract more articles to the journal “Russian Journal of Construction Science and Technology” published by UrFU, the journal will be included in the list of Russian peer-reviewed scientific publications of the Higher Attestation Commission (VAK).
