IIT Kanpur Conducts Training for 46th Batch of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Management and Design Trainees
Kanpur : The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) conducted a 10-week Short Term Intensive Training Programme for the 46th batch of Management and Design Trainees (MT/DTs) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The programme, organized under the Office of Outreach Activities and led by Prof. Bishakh Bhattacharya from IIT Kanpur, trained a total of 59 participants in 5 core and 2 elective subjects. The training was delivered by 12 faculty members from the Departments of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, IIT Kanpur, along with Prof. C. Venkatesan from IIT Jodhpur.
The programme aimed to enhance the knowledge and technical expertise of the trainees, covering fundamental and advanced topics such as Aircraft Stability and Control, Finite Element Modeling and Analysis, Aerodynamic Surface Design, Hydraulic Systems, Smart Sensors and Actuators, Material Selection and Characterization, and more. Participants were also exposed to hands-on laboratory experiments and technical projects using cutting-edge facilities.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the programme provided extensive hands-on experience through laboratory-based experiments in areas such as temperature control systems, magnetic levitation, vibration control using tuned mass dampers, sound analysis using FFT, 3D digital image correlation, fluid dynamics, UAV propeller testing, and vision-based navigation systems. The trainees also worked on an array of innovative projects, including metamaterial-based damping systems for rotors, drone-based detection using AI, bandgap generation in multiple rotor systems, hyperloop transportation systems for goods, airborne manta-ray type UAVs integrated with super cam, 3D-printed morphable winglets for UAVs, and prototypes like box wings, drone shooters, monocopters, auto-rotating bodies, manta ray underwater vehicles, and dragonfly models.
A total of 12 technical project models were developed by the trainees and exhibited at the Outreach Auditorium, inaugurated by Prof. Amalendu Chandra, Dean of Faculty Affairs, IIT Kanpur, and Shri Girish Bhaviyavar, DGM & Senior Faculty, HAL Management Academy. The programme concluded with a valedictory function attended by the Deans of Faculty Affairs, R&D, and HoD ME & HoD Design, IIT Kanpur, alongside two emeritus professors from IIT Kanpur and key dignitaries from HAL Management Academy.
The training marked a significant achievement in fostering advanced engineering skills, with the programme’s success attributed to the collective efforts of the faculty and staff of IIT Kanpur and the support of HAL Management Academy.
