Student Induction Programme ‘Deeksharambh’ Held at AMU’s Department of English

 

Aligarh : The Department of English at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) organized the Student Induction Programme (SIP) 2024-25, known as ‘Deeksharambh,’ for the newly enrolled undergraduate and postgraduate students. The programme aimed to introduce the students to university life, its historical significance, and the department’s offerings, including both curricular and co-curricular activities, while also familiarising them with the culture of AMU.

The event was presided over by Prof. Arif Nazir, Dean, Faculty of Arts, who inspired the students by quoting from the Katha Upanishad. He highlighted the alignment of the Deeksharambh programme with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasizing education’s role in promoting national values. Prof. Nazir concluded with Robert Frost’s lines, “And miles to go before I sleep,”

Prof. Shaheena Tarannum, Chairperson of the Department, emphasized the contributions of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of AMU. She urged students to stay updated through the department’s website and encouraged their participation in various events. Prof. Tarannum assured the new students of a supportive and enriching experience within the department.

Prof. Md. Rizwan Khan, former Chairperson of the department, spoke on the significance of character building and the university’s achievements. He emphasized collaborative teaching and announced the revival of the discussion group for postgraduate students and research scholars.

Prof. Samina Khan, Presiding Officer of the Internal Complaints Committee, stressed the importance of maintaining harmony among students and reiterated AMU’s zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and harassment.

Prof. Jawed S. Ahmad, Coordinator of the Undergraduate Program, introduced the new undergraduate students to the structure of the Four-Year Undergraduate Program, encouraging them to develop critical and analytical skills through reading. Prof. Vibha Sharma, Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program, briefed the students on the available courses and highlighted the department’s Internship and Outreach Program designed to enhance research and critical skills.
