KU Leuven Falcons Take Flight: University Sports Teams Showcase Their Spirit

With the launch of the name ‘KU Leuven Falcons’, KU Leuven wants to create a strong community around the university sports teams. It strengthens the identity of these teams and calls on fellow students to come and support the teams.

“The new identity of the KU Leuven Falcons forges a bond between athletes and supporters, and also bridges the gap between recreational and competitive sports,” says Pieter Van Kelst, manager of KU Leuven Sport. “This will ensure that every athlete at KU Leuven feels connected. We are all Falcons!”

And the new name has another purpose. The greater visibility and recognisability of the teams should make even more students want to move, because no healthy mind without a healthy body. KU Leuven sport therefore has an extensive range of more than 80 movement activities, for athletes of all levels. And those who want to compete can join the university team of their sport, under the wings of the KU Leuven Falcons.

The choice of the name ‘Falcons’ is no coincidence. It is a reference to the rich history of the university that will celebrate its 600th anniversary next year. The College De Valk, one of the oldest buildings of KU Leuven, which now houses the Faculty of Law, was founded around 1425. Their motto was: “Volitat super omnia falco” , “The falcon towers above everything and everyone”  and it is that thought that will also motivate our university athletes.
