Nanjing University Unveils “Great Beauty of Chinese Characters” Course to Celebrate Linguistic Heritage

On October 20, Nanjing University launched a new general education course titled “Great Beauty of Chinese Characters” at the Xianlin Campus. This innovative program is a pioneering aesthetic education initiative among comprehensive universities in China. Open to all undergraduate students, the course emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage through the lens of Chinese characters and calligraphy. It aims to enhance students’ aesthetic appreciation while deepening their understanding of the beauty and significance of this ancient writing system.

Sun Xiaoyun, president of the China Calligraphers Association and director of the Nanjing University Institute of Chinese Calligraphy, is a co-designer of this course. 

Chen Yunsong Vice Chair of the University CPC Council, highlighted NJU’s commitment to promoting Chinese culture and cultural education. 

Li Qiang, a representative of the Ministry of Education, awarded certificates of appointment  to Sun Xiaoyun, Lai Yonghai, and Chen Yunsong, the chief professors of the course team.

Lu Xiancai, Vice President of NJU, presented certificates of appointment to course team members.

The “Great Beauty of Chinese Characters” Promotion Center was unveiled during the event. This center is  designed to support the course’s development, and promote  calligraphy research and education.

Professor Lai Yonghai delivered the first lecture of the course. He discussed the origins of Chinese characters and their significance in traditional culture.

Attendees expressed their likeness for the course, looking forward to further exploring the cultural richness and artistic value of Chinese characters.
