ALIGARH: Prof. Mohd. Aslam, Incharge, Nephrology Section, Department of Medicine, J.NMedical College, Aligarh Muslim University delivered a lecture at the 36th conference of the International Society for Fluoride Research (ISFR), held at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi.

Prof. Aslam highlighted the problem of chronic kidney disease and kidney stones which are prevalent in Indian sub continent and increasing at an alarming rate. He said that in 25-30 percent of patients, the cause of the disease is not found and in this subset of patients, heavy metals including high level of fluoride in drinking water and food chain are identified as the causative agent. He further said that research on animal models has proved that these agents cause changes in kidney and lead to renal failure and other kidney diseases including stones. His observations of such patients show that most of these patients belonged to Aligarh district and they worked in lock factories, he added.

Prof Anjum ParvezChairman, Department of Medicine, congratulated Prof Aslam him for presenting his work at an international forum and highlighting emerging role of heavy metals and fluoride as causative factor in kidney diseases.
