World Water Development Report 2020 – Water and Climate Change
UNESCO New Delhi for wider outreach has translated into Hindi, the Executive Summary of the 2020 edition of World Water Development Report (WWDR 2020), entitled ‘Water and Climate Change’.
The 2020 edition aims at helping the water community to tackle the challenges of climate change and informing the climate change community about the opportunities that improved water management offers in terms of adaptation and mitigation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined the importance of water and sanitation for the well-being of humans. Climate change has had a negative impact on water security in the region and thus climate resilient infrastructure and improved regional water cooperation are needed to build resilience against similar disasters
In particular, combining climate change adaptation and mitigation measures through water is a triple win solution. First, it benefits sustainable water resources management and the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation. Second, it directly addresses both the causes and impacts of climate change, including disaster risk reduction. And third, it contributes, directly and indirectly, to meeting several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — hunger, poverty, health, industry, and so on – and above all SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation.
The United Nations World Water Development Report is UN-Water’s flagship report on water and sanitation issues, focusing on a different theme each year. The report is published by UNESCO, on behalf of UN-Water and its production is coordinated by the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme. Launched in conjunction with World Water Day, the report provides decision-makers with knowledge and tools to formulate and implement sustainable water policies.
