UNESCO Director-General condemns murder of video journalist Nabil Hassan Al-Quaiti in Yemen
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has urged all parties to the conflict in Yemen to protect media workers following the killing of freelance video journalist Nabil Hassan Al-Quaiti in a suburb of Aden on 2 June.
“I condemn the murder of Nabil Hassan Al-Quaiti,” said the Director-General. “I call on all parties to respect their obligation under the Geneva Conventions to protect journalists. Brave reporters like Nabil Hassan carry out important work keeping people in Yemen informed and documenting the extreme conditions their country is experiencing. They must be offered every possible protection.”
Award winning photographer and videographer Al-Quaiti, also known as Nabil Hassan, was a contributor to news agency AFP. He was killed by unidentified gunmen outside his home in Dar Sad, in the vicinity of Aden.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
