AMU to observe Yoga Day on digital platforms

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will observe the sixth edition of the International Yoga Day on digital media platforms sans mass gatherings. The decision has been taken in line with the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s message in which he has encouraged people to stay active and fit during the pandemic by performing various Yoga Asanas at home with family members.

The video message, which has been shared widely in the AMU community, the Prime Minister said, “Yoga day celebrations are an occasion of mass gatherings, due to extraordinary times, this year people should observe the day at their homes.”

Noting that this year’s theme is ‘Yoga at home’ and ‘Yoga with family’, he said due to the pandemic, it has to be observed indoors.

“Since, Yoga leads to both physical and mental wellbeing, and increases the individual’s ability to fight diseases; it becomes relevant more than ever after the Covid 19 outbreak,” said the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor.

He added that even as the Yoga Day will be observed indoors, it is the feeling of fighting together that manifests solidarity.

At AMU, the Prime Minister’s message will be the highlight of the main event for International Day of Yoga. The Prime Minister’s remarks will be televised at 6:30 am on 21 June, 2020. The University has marked all previous editions of Yoga Day with mass demonstrations of Yoga in the campus premises. But, unlike previous occasions, there will be no mass gatherings this year due to the threat of infections posed by coronavirus. ?
