Campaign for Gender Sensitization Concludes in Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) campus wide ‘Campaign for Gender Sensitization’ concluded with a mesmerising Nukkad Natak’ (Street Play) ‘Astitva’ performed by AMU Drama club students at the Abdullah Nursery and Primary School. Mr. Dishank Sharma and Ms. Razia Khanam are the co-writers and directors of ‘Astitva’.

ICC members used extremely effective medium “Nukkad Natak” with catchy dialogues, attracting slogans and powerful dramatic elements to educate students on the subject. The campaign got a stupendous response and was attended by students, principal and the staff of schools besides ICC members.

In the first phase of the campaign in August, ICC covered ABK Girls High School (Girls), AMU Girls High School and Sr. Secondary School (Girls). In the second phase, Nukad Natak performances were held at AMU City School (Boys), Saiyyid Hamid Sr. Secondary School (Boys) and City Girls High school (Qazi Para).

Professor Shaheena Tarannum (ICC Presiding Officer) said that it is the need of the hour to come forward and join hands to fight gender bias. She added that since 40 percent of the population is below 18 years of age, it is imperative to engage the youth in making a healthy society.

Prof Samina Khan said that this campaign reflects ICC’s conviction towards women’s safety and for providing safer workplaces for women. She pointed out that more such campaigns will take place in the university.

Dr Farha Ashhar (ICC member) highlighted the importance of reporting harassment cases and creating awareness.

Ms Sabiha Naaz Lari and Dr Juhi Gupta were also present.
