2nd Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting Held

The 2nd Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting (ETWG) under India’s G20 Presidency concluded in Gandhinagar, with over 100 delegates from G20 member countries, 10 special invitee countries and 14 International Organisations participating.

The meeting was chaired by Shri Alok Kumar, ETWG Chair and Secretary, Ministry of Power, and attended by other Secretaries, including Shri Bhupinder Singh Bhalla from  Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Shri Vivek Bharadwaj from Ministry Of Mines, and Shri Amrit Lal Meena from Ministry of Coal.

Member countries discussed key priority areas outlined under India’s Presidency and engaged in constructive discussions and deliberations building on the discussions from the 1st ETWG.

Low-cost financing for energy transition was an important point of discussion where members discussed the important role of international financial structure including raising the ambitions of multilateral financial institutions.

Member countries emphasized the need to protect intellectual property rights in the context of technology transfer and showed wide-ranging support for the proposed formation of the Global Biofuels Alliance.

The event also featured three side events focusing on policy, regulatory, and financial frameworks and to promote cooperation amongst G20 nations. An exhibition showcased India’s first H2 Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) truck.

The 2nd ETWG Meeting ended on a note of collaboration and a commitment by member countries to advance the cause of global cooperation in clean energy transition.

The discussions will be taken forward in the 3rd ETWG Meeting in Mumbai from May 15-17, 2023.
