Aalto University: Two new buildings to be built in the centre of Otaniemi campus

As part of developing the ever growing and internationalising Otaniemi campus, Aalto University will build with two new buildings in the middle of the campus. Construction work will begin in January 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in the summer of 2023, well in advance of Jokeri Light Rail beginning to operate.

The new buildings will be at Otakaari 2A and Otakaari 2B, and will be located in a prominent location in the area adjacent to Otakaari, Maarintie and Konemiehentie. The buildings have been designed by SARC Architects, who also planned the renovation of Aalto Töölö and won the Award for Finnish Architecture for the New Children’s Hospital.

Space for creativity and events
Approximately 6,500 brm2 of state-of-the-art multifunctional space for teaching, research, events and a studio centre will be completed at Otakaari 2A. Otakaari 2A’s facilities will be equipped with new digital technologies that enable cross-disciplinary research and teaching, and will take Aalto’s events to a new level, both on campus and virtually. The aim of the new building is to showcase for Aalto’s unique research and teaching both in Finland and internationally. In addition to the facilities serving Aalto’s users, the building will have space for restaurant and event service operators.

Otakaari 2B brings approximately 5,700 brm2 for teaching, research and office space to the School of Science and the School of Electrical Engineering.

Changes to pedestrian ways, cycle routes and parking
The construction site of the buildings will be fenced off at the beginning of January 2022, when the parking spaces at the Otakaari 2B construction site will also be removed. At the same time, the pedestrian ways and cycle lanes will be completely moved to Väre and the School of Business building side. Construction sites may cause temporary disturbances on Otakaari, Maarintie and Konemiehentie.
