Abhinav Bindra was at BML Munjal University to interact with students under the university’s ‘Leadership Talk’ initiative

New Delhi: In a freewheeling discussion with students of BML Munjal University, Mr. Abhinav Bindra, the first Indian to win an individual gold at the Olympic Games, advised students to ‘let perfection be your obsession’ and that ‘the only substitute for hard work is more hard work’. Addressing students, Mr. Bindra, known to be a perfectionist himself, shared rare insights into his journey to win an Olympic gold, which was often riddled with self-doubts and physical injuries. He cautioned students not to be distracted by obstacles and to stay true to their goals. Comparing a university student’s life to the quest for an Olympic medal, Mr. Bindra advised students to ‘Stay committed to your cause and to play ethically.’ Mr. Abhinav Bindra was at BML Munjal University to address students under the university’s ‘Leadership Talk’ initiative. After the address, he gave away the annual sports awards and felicitated students for co-curricular activities.

During the Leadership Talk, Mr. Abhinav Bindra revealed that winning his first gold at the district level competition was the most exciting one for him, even more than the Olympic Gold. On being asked about India’s performance at the Olympic Games, he candidly stated that there’s no doubt about India’s huge Olympic potential. However, it lies dormant and unutilized due to several factors including lack of parental, social, institutional and technical support. He frankly encouraged students to pursue their goals, in whichever field they may be, with a passion and single-minded determination.

The Leadership Talk was moderated by another Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, Mr. Gurbir Singh, who is also the father of another World Champion shooter, Mr. Manavjit Singh Sandhu. At present Mr. Gurbir Singh is Director – Sports at BML Munjal University.

Mr. Bindra also signed and gave away copies of his book ‘A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold and Beyond.’ Mr. Bindra was taken on a guided tour of BML Munjal University campus, and took time out to chat with students. The campus was abuzz with excitement, with students and faculty thrilled to have the Olympic star amidst them, asking him questions about his life and plans and clicked selfies with him.
