Aligarh Muslim University observed the ‘World Environment Day’

ALIGARH: Faculty members, students and staff at various departments, centres and faculties of Aligarh Muslim University observed the ‘World Environment Day’ through a slew of green activities across the university. Cleaning drives, awareness programmes and tree plantations were some of the highlights of the day.

At the Department of Linguistics, Prof MJ Warsi, Chairman, emphasised the significance of the day and the need for spreading awareness for environment protection.

The UGC Human Resource Development Centre organized several events including the “Save Water: Earthen Pot Painting Workshop”, an English skit on ‘Do Not Waste Water’ and an engaging session on “Fun with Composting” conducted by the Director, University Health Service, Dr. Ali Jafar Abedi.

The Centre for Skill Development and Career Planning, Women’s College organized a competitive event, “Developing Skills to Recycle and Reuse Old Newspapers and Magazines” under Mission LiFE.

The Department of Home Science organized an activity on the theme, “Composting: Making the World Better”. Chairperson, Prof. Farzana Alim said that a paragraph writing competition was also organized on this occasion in which Ms. Rida Hasan won the first prize while Iqra Rehman got the second and Iram Fatima received the third prize.

The Department of Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib organized a pamphlet distribution drive on the topic on plastic free campus. In an extempore speech competition, Mohd Zeeshan was declared first, Azam Siddiqui second and Ikramul Haque third.

At the Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension, the chief guest, Prof. Saira Mehnaz, chairperson, Department of Community Medicine spoke on the importance of people’s participation in reducing plastic waste, adding that India produces 3.4 tonnes of plastic waste which can be reduced only if everyone takes a pledge to reduce the use of plastic.

Dr ZA Dental College organized a series of events including a virtual meeting and a plantation drive to raise awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability.

The Department of Economics organized an outreach programme to Chattari village to create awareness about healthy environmental practices. Lectures in Hindi and Urdu were delivered by Prof. Md. Abdus Salam (Chairman), Prof. Nisar Ahmad Khan and Dr. Shirin Rais (Convener).

The Department of Philosophy marked the day with a street play underlining the theme #BeatPlasticPollution. An educational film titled “The Turning Point” was screened to highlight the various aspects of the climate change.

The students of AMU ABK High School (Girls) conducted several activities, including the Best out of Waste, face painting, and world puzzle competitions to mark the World Environment Day. A special morning assembly was conducted and a skit was presented by the students highlighting the harmful effects of single use plastic.

A number of other departments of studies, colleges, schools and centres observed the day in different manners and their heads conducted a pledge to safeguard the environment from various types of pollutants. They included the Institute of Persian Research, Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Abdullah Hall, Aftab Hall, Departments of English, Hindi, Tashreeh wa Munafeul Aza, Botany, Applied Chemistry, Hindi, Central Automobile Workshop, Ahmadi School for Visually Challenged and AMU Girls School.
