Alzheimer’s disease challenges and advances discussed

The Science, Art, Education and Society Network Study Group (CienArtES) of the Institute of Advanced Studies Polo Ribeirão Preto (IEA-RP) of USP and the Graduate Program in Physiology of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP) of USP, promote on May 11th, starting at 5 pm, the round table Alzheimer’s disease: where are we? – Main limitations and clinical-scientific advances in the fight against this dementia .

The event is exclusively face-to-face and will be held at the IEA-RP Event Space. Registration is free and must be done at this link . A certificate will be sent to participants.

The speakers will be the doctoral student from the Postgraduate Program in Neurosciences at FMRP Suélen Santos Alves, the physician and professor at the Centro Universitário Barão de Mauá Guilherme Riccioppo Rodrigues and the doctoral student of the Postgraduate Program in Fundamental Nursing at the School of Nursing of Ribeirão Preto (EERP) from USP Gabriela Lima. Moderation is by the coordinator of the CienArtES Study Group, Norberto García-Cairasco.

They will explain the difficulty in establishing a correct diagnosis of the disease, the evolution of the clinical condition with progressive loss of functionality, the presence of neuropsychiatric symptoms, treatment, caregiver burden, social support and advances in scientific research.

Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable and highly debilitating progressive neurodegenerative disorder, which makes it a serious public health problem. According to estimates by Alzheimer’s Disease International, headquartered in the United Kingdom, by 2030, 74.7 million people worldwide will have this disease. In Brazil, data from the Ministry of Health indicate that 1.2 million people have the disease and 100,000 new cases are diagnosed per year.

The round table is part of the program linked to the exhibition 43 Years of Neuroscience & Art: Building Pluriverses – Integrating Múltiplos Saberes , in which the coordinator of the Study Group Rede CienArtES Norberto García-Cairasco presents paintings, drawings and sculptures that make up a summarized portrait of the full experience of his 43 years as an educator and scientist in the field of neuroscience.
