American Oncology Institute (AOI) Vijayawada, Mangalagiri Successfully Treats Patient with Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)
American Oncology Institute (AOI) Vijayawada in Mangalagiri successfully treats a 46-year-old male, diagnosed with Lung Adenocarcinoma (Lung Cancer). Employing advanced medical techniques and expertise, the medical team at AOI conducted a minimally invasive Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) to address the patient’s condition, resulting in a swift and effective recovery.
Mr. Yarlagadda Karimulla presented with a history of shortness of breath for a month. A comprehensive evaluation at AOI, including a CECT chest scan, revealed a lesion in the upper lobe of his left lung. Further investigation through CT-guided biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the lung. It is one of the most common types of lung cancer that usually begins along the outer sections of the lungs and the lining of the bronchi (airway passages into the lungs). It is different from other types of lung carcinomas, which are usually more centrally located in the lungs.
Explaining the diagnoses, Dr Kalyan Chakradhar Polavarapu, Surgical Oncologist, American Oncology Institute (AOI) Vijayawada, Mangalagiri, said, “The patient received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy before surgery, exhibiting a positive response upon revaluation, as indicated by the CECT chest scan. However during assessment of surgical fitness his echocardiogram showed Regional wall motion abnormality in RCA territory. We evaluated the patient with angiography which revealed a significant problem in one of the blood vessels (single-vessel disease) in the same area of the heart (RCA). It was narrowed by about 80-85%, causing moderate risk for the surgery. Considering the heart condition, we proceeded with a minimally invasive VATS Upper Lobectomy of the left lung under general anaesthesia. Within 4 hours the procedure was completed and successful.
The minimally invasive surgery for the Upper Lobectomy of the left lung played a crucial role in facilitating Mr. KARIMULLA’s speedy recovery, with minimal blood loss during the procedure and reduced post-operative pain.”
The patient’s post-operative recovery was uneventful, allowing for the removal of the ICD (Intercostal Drain) on the 4th post-operative day and discharge of patient on 6th post op day. The minimally invasive VATS procedure enhanced patient comfort allowing for good respiratory efforts from day 1 post-surgery. This intervention promoted the expansion of the remnant left lung, reducing the likelihood of post-operative infections.
Dr Kiran Kumar Mandala, Facility Director, said, “The use of minimally invasive surgery in thoracic surgeries not only offers numerous advantages, such as small incisions and faster post-operative recovery, but also exemplifies the medical excellence practiced at our cancer facility. We at AOI in Vijayawada, Mangalagiri and Guntur are dedicated to providing precise and personalized cancer care.
