AMU Faculty Explores Urdu Translation of Immanuel Kant’s Philosophy

Aligarh : Mr. Syed Salman Abbas, Assistant Professor (German) at the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), recently presented a research paper on the Urdu translation of Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason by Syed Abid Husain. His talk was part of the conference titled Mensch, Maschine und Modernität, organized by the Goethe Society of India in collaboration with Savitribai Phule Pune University and the German Academic Exchange Service, India, and hosted by the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune.

In his paper, titled Translation as a Site of Making and Unmaking of Epistemic Expansion: The Case of the First Urdu Translation of Kant’s Kritik der Reinen Vernunft, Mr. Abbas examined the intricate connections between Modernity, Philosophy, German Studies, and South Asian history. He highlighted the power of translation to challenge and reshape the epistemic authority of modernity in a South Asian context.
