AMU Faculty’s book released at Sahitya Academy, New Delhi

Aligarh: Dr S Chandinibi’s (Associate Professor, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University) book titled ‘Kalvettukkalil Devadasi’ has been released by Member of Parliament and poetess, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi at Sahitya Academy Auditorium, Mandi House in New Delhi.

It chronicles the life and history of ‘Devdasis’ and the system that prevailed in India, from the inception to the abolition of Devadasi system with archaeological evidence. It mainly deals with Tamil region but covers allmost all Indian states. Devaradiyar (Devotees of God) and Devar Magalar (God’s daughters) are the terms used for these women temple functionaries in Tamil which is unique to Tamil region.

The launch was attended by V Renganathan, IPS (Retd), President, Delhi Tamil Sangam; Jagadesan Kannan, IPS, Joint Commissioner, Delhi Police; S Rejesh, IPS, Deputy Commissioner, UP Police; P Arun Kumar, IIS, Deputy Director, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and A Annamali, Director, National Gandhi Museum, New Delhi.
