AMU mourns demise of legendary Lata Mangeshkar
Aligarh : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) fraternity has joined the two-day national mourning period of the iconic nonagenarian singer, Lata Mangeshkar, whose voice defined generations of Indians.
Extending condolences on behalf of the AMU community, Vice-Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor said, “I am saddened to learn of the death of Lata Mangeshkar. She was the ‘Nightingale of India’, a revered figure in the Country and one of the biggest cultural icons and a singer whose popularity was spread across the world”.
“Besides being the singing legend she was, Lata Mangeshkar was also a Rajya Sabha member for six years—her term being famous for not taking any allowances. She received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest honour, in 2001. Her demise has left a void that is impossible to fill”, added the Vice-Chancellor.
Prof Mansoor further said, Lata ji will always be remembered for dominating Hindi film music for more than half a century.
“Throughout the arc of her life, Lata ji carried on producing magic with her songs in various Indian languages. And while millions of people will miss Lata Mangeshkar, her songs are certain to endure”, he pointed out.
