AMU professor speaks on lesser-known languages at an international conference
ALIGARH : Prof M J Warsi, Chairman, Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University and President, Linguistic Society of India, while delivering a lecture at a two-day international conference on ‘India as a Linguistic Area with Special Reference to the Non-scheduled Languages”, organized by the Department of Linguistics, Kashmir University (KU), in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysuru and the Society for Endangered and Lesser Known Languages (SEL), Lucknow. said that “lesser known languages are treasure houses of indigenous knowledge and with the loss of a language, the treasure gets lost”.
“The linguistic landscape of India is multi-layered as well as complex. Every single language has many variations, which are based on caste, region, gender, occupation and age. India is like a beautiful flower pot which has a variety of flowers of different shades, sizes, colours and types, which enhances the pluralistic ethos of our country”, said Prof Warsi.
Prof. Warsi said, as a President of the Linguistic Society of India, his effort would be to approach UPSC to introduce linguistics as a subject in UPSC which would also signify the recognition of linguistics as an important field of study with practical applications in various domains, including governance, administration, and policy-making.
