AMU Research Scholar Presents Paper at University of Cambridge

Aligarh: Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Research Scholar, Department of West Asian and North African Studies, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) presented a research paper entitled “The GCC as protagonist in the Yemeni Civil War: a test for cooperation at the time of regional challenges”, in the 13th Annual Gulf Research Meeting 2023 conference, organized by the Gulf Research Centre, University of Cambridge, UK.

Analysing the causes of political upheaval in Yemen and the clashes between the Houthi and anti-Houthi coalition, Mr Ahmed said that “conflicting policies among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states hampered the sub-regional organization’s ability to contribute to regional peace building”.

He also delineated how the GCC works as an organisation and why it has been unable to resolve some regional crises, and check the surge of sectarianism in the region.

“There is no better option for Saudi Arabia than to leave Yemen and achieve Vision-2030 if she wants to be a regional power”, he concluded.

Imtiaz Ahmed is a senior research fellow at AMU. He is pursuing his research under the guidance of Prof Rakshanda F. Fazli on the topic “Yemeni Diaspora in India: A Geographical Appraisal”.
