AMU surgeons perform rare finger replantation after traumatic amputation

ALIGARH  : A team of surgeons at the Department of Plastic Surgery, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, in a rare surgery demonstration, successfully replanted the index finger of a patient who suffered a traumatic amputation after an accident by a grinder. The painstaking effort of the medical professionals involved has added an instance of remarkable success in the field of reconstructive surgery.

Rameshwar Dayal, a 49-year-old patient visited the emergency department with a severed index finger by a high-speed grinder, which also caused damages to other digits and vascular injury to his middle finger as well. The situation was critical, and needed an emergency attendance to restore blood supply and prevent irreversible tissue damage.

A team of plastic surgeons, led by Dr M Fahud Khurram and Dr Sheikh Sarfraz, took up the case and the amputated finger was carefully preserved in a sterile saline-soaked gauze, so that the finger remained viable for replantation.

The surgical procedure was carried out by Dr Sarfraz, Dr Noha, Dr Rupraj, Dr Shishir and Dr Fahaduddin, along with the anesthetist Dr Umme Maria and her team.

Dr Sarfraz, who was the chief operating surgeon, told that the procedure included debridement and tagging, Bone Fixation: Using k-wire fixation, they stabilized the bone fragments and repair of volar structures.

He said that replantation surgery is a race against time as the amputated part has a limited window of viability. The team worked tirelessly to restore blood flow, suturing vessels and nerves.

Following the successful replantation, patient has entered a rigorous rehabilitation programme and the hand therapy specialists will guide him through exercises to regain strength, flexibility, and dexterity.

Dr. M Fahud Khurram, Chairman of the department, emphasized the need for public awareness regarding hand safety.

Senior plastic surgeon, Prof Imran Ahmad lauded the efforts of the team of surgeons for their dedication and expertise, adding that they have not only saved a finger but also restored hope for countless patients facing similar challenges.
