AMU VC releases a book on Anticancer Drug Candidates

ALIGARH : The Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof Naima Khatoon today released a book, ‘Advances and Prospects of 3D Metal-Based Anticancer Drug Candidates,’ jointly authored by Prof Farukh Arjmand, Prof Sartaj Tabassum and Dr Huzaifa Yasir Khan, Department of Chemistry, AMU.

Published by Springer Nature, the book is an advanced textbook that summarizes the classification of metal-based anti-cancer drugs, their plausible biochemical and mechanistic pathways, combining drug strategies for hitting multiple therapeutic targets at the intracellular level, and advanced drug delivery strategies.

Prof Arjumand said that the book covers the metallodrugs for the efficacious treatment of diverse cancerous strains and recent advances in drug delivery strategies that are used for developing these metal-based therapeutics as potent anticancer agents in vitro and in vivo. The book also covers different biophysical and analytical techniques for studying metal-ligand and metal-macromolecular interactions.

She said that this book could help to promote inorganic metal-based chemotherapeutic drugs in the pipeline to clinic.

Prof Arjmand and her research group is working in the area of Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry for the last 30 years and is an expert chemist for developing metal-based anticancer drug candidates against various phenotypes of cancer cells.

She has reported many potentmetallo-drugs that possess two main druggable components –tuneable metal at the ‘core’ centre and the ligand ‘pharmacophore’ scaffold exhibiting a distinct mechanism of action at the molecular level.

Prof Arjumand has published 187 papers, 3 patents and 5558 citations in Scopus with h-index of 42. Presently, she is the Editor of a prestigious journal of Elsevier, Journal of Molecular Structure.

Prof. Qamrul Hasan Ansari, Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Zeba N. Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, and the authors were present on this occasion.
