AMU: Women’s College celebrates Founder’s Day

Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University’s Women’s College celebrated its Founder’s Day by paying glowing tributes to its founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and his wife Begum Waheed Jahan.

Women’s College celebrates Founder’s Day on the wedding anniversary of its Founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. Floral tributes were paid on the graves of Padam Bhushan Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and his wife Begum Waheed Jahan. Teaching staff, students and Non-teaching Staff were present while paying their tributes to Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

“Sheikh Abdullah pioneered the female education in India and dedicated his life to the promotion of education in women to make them enlightened and empowered”, said Professor Naima Khatoon Gulrez, Principal, Women’s College, Aligarh Muslim University, while addressing the students at Founder’s Day.

Prof Naima Khatoon said Sheikh Sahab, who is popularly known as Papa Mian, had great vision for empowering women through education and made invaluable services to the country by starting a school in Upper Fort area in 1906 for girls. This school was later shifted to Civil Lines area which later developed into the present Women’s College.

Prof Khatoon said that Papa Mian served the country as an accomplished lawyer, administrator and author and championed the cause of female education in a time when it was considered a taboo to even talk about it publicly.

Prof Khatoon said that Begum Waheed Jahan carried forward the female education movement and facilitated higher education for women in Aligarh which later developed into a big centre of female enlightenment and empowerment.

A number of senior teachers including Professor Ghazala Naheed (Provost, Abdullah Hall), Principal AMU Girls’ High School Amna Malik, Principal, Senior Secondary School (Girls) Nagma Irfan were also present on the occasion.
