Amway celebrates Louis Braille Day in collaboration with All India Confederation of the Blind
Gurugram: Amway India, the country’s largest FMCG direct selling company, celebrated the 210th birth anniversary of Louis Braille with its 11 NGO partners for the eleventh consecutive year by organizing myriad initiatives. In Gurugram, Amway inaugurated the refurbished computer training center for the visually impaired by upgrading the equipment and accessories and provided braille books for the school library to further aid in Braille learning of the visually impaired students. Amway had set up this computer center in 2010 under its National Project for the visually impaired. In line with the Government of India’s ‘Accessible India’ initiative, Amway currently supports 11 computer centres across the country, benefitting more than 1,000 visually impaired students every year.
The event was graced by the Chief Guest, Ms. Usha Kundu, ACP CAW, Gurugram Police. Present on the occasion were Mr. Rahul Gupta, Vice President – Procurement & Planning, Amway India and Padma Shri J L Kaul, Secy. General, All India Confederation of the Blind. As a part of the program, a special cultural dance performance was organized by the visually impaired students of AICB, followed by Braille reading by the students. The event witnessed an active participation of Amway direct sellers and employees.
Mr. GS Cheema, Sr. Vice President – North & South, Amway India, said, “At Amway, the main focus of our National Project for the visually impaired is to empower and enable the visually impaired individuals by providing them avenues for inclusive education. The program has benefitted more than 250,000 visually impaired individuals so far by providing various aids and equipment useful in education including braille books, audio/braille libraries and by providing them technology and IT training through computer centers across India. We believe that the braille system plays an important role in building the foundation of education for the visually impaired individuals and we are happy to provide them the much-needed encouragement by organizing such competitions.”

Louis Braille invented the Braille system to enable the visually impaired individuals to read and write. World Braille Day is celebrated annually on January 4, the birthdate of Louis Braille to recognize his contributions towards helping the visually impaired individuals to remain part of the mainstream society by reading and writing as a normal person.
