Annual conference begins at Dr Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College
Aligarh : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammad Gulrez, while addressing the inaugural session of the 8th annual conference of the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India, UP Chapter, organized in collaboration with the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, AMU, upheld the significance of oral and maxillofacial procedures in correcting the facial defects, and said that Maxillofacial surgeons do a noble service by treating several kind of deformities, injuries and defects in the neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region.
“This dynamic field is in a constant state of development and presents several opportunities to learn new skills and procedures. The conference will help equip the practicing surgeons with the latest technology and innovations in this field and will encourage the budding surgeons to broaden their medical knowledge, expand their abilities to provide quality care and understand their responsibilities”, he added.
The chief guest, Dr Vikas Dhupar, National President of the Association said that it is a privilege to visit AMU and witness the great academic environment of the university. He said he was first introduced to the AOMSI by Prof YC Mishra and the organization has carried out a massive capaign to educate people regarding facial trauma, and its rdemedies.
Dr Dhupar said the AOMSI has several activity based support for students, including the fellowship in trauma, oncology, cleft lip and platate, etc.
The guest of honour, Dr S. Girish Rao, General Secretary, AOMSI said that his dream to visit AMU has come true and it is a pleasant experience for him to see the beautiful university campus.
He said that AOMSI is committed to ‘save life by saving face’. He said the organization will continue to organize programmes to educate people and help maxillofacial surgeons to upgrade their knowledge by sharing it with experts.
The Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Veena Maheshwari said that the Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are routinely involved in handling patients with needs that not only have a physical but a psychological implication as well. She said that transformation of a patient by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon from sickness to health leaves a lasting impact on their lives.
Prof. Haris M Khan, Principal, JN Medical College said Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a dynamic and multifaceted specialty that encompasses a broad range of procedures, from intricate facial reconstructions to dental implantology, temporomandibular joint surgeries to orthographic surgeries, and much more. This conference will serve as an invaluable platform for the participants to come together and exchange knowledge, experience and research that will shape the future of their profession.
Prof. R. K. Tewari, Principal, Dr ZA Dental College said the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has regularly been involved in pro-academic activities by holding state level conferences and seminars. I am sure this workshop will open new dimensions for discussion in the technique and treatment facilities available in India and will benefit the participants of the conference.
Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof. G. S. Hashmi, Organizing Chairman, said it is going to be a scientific extravaganza for delegates and trainees across the country, especially UP and NCR region. The event consists of intellectually stimulating plenary, keynote and scientific deliberation and the participants will be involved in paper and poster presentations and discussion with a galaxy of reputed maxillofacial surgeons.
The Organizing Secretary, Dr. Sajjad Abdur Rahman said that it is second time that the department is organizing this annual conference. We have made stupendous efforts to make this conference a success and the scientific papers and posters will help the trainee surgeons hone their presentation skills.

Dr Devendra Kumar, Aligarh, Dr Nikhil Mehrotra, Lucknow and Dr Bharat Kankane, Jhansi were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award by the Association.
