Anti-Tobacco awareness vehicle flagged off
ALIGARH : The Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor, Prof Naima Khatoon flagged off a tobacco awareness vehicle, set to cover a 10 km radius to spread anti-tobacco message among people, during the concluding function of a week-long series of events, marking the World No-Tobacco Day, organized by the Department of Periodontia and Community Dentistry, Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, AMU. The programme aimed at raising awareness about the ill effects of tobacco consumption and advocating for the “protection of children from the tobacco industry’s interference”, the theme of the day.
Prof Khatoon, along with the Principal of the Dental College, Prof R.K. Tewari, distributed nicotine replacement lozenges, toothpaste and educational pamphlets among hospital attendees, emphasizing the importance of cessation support and oral hygiene.
She also inaugurated the “Quit Tobacco Line” (9068075770) at the Public Health Dentistry Clinic, where she wrote a visitor message hoping the helpline will enhance the prospects for tobacco cessation efforts, providing essential support to individuals trying to quit tobacco.
The officiating Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Seema Hakim also attended the concluding programme.
The undergraduate students presented a skit at the college reception area, raising concerns about the increasing use of tobacco and making people aware of the societal and health implications of use of tobacco.
Prof. Tewari emphasized the Dental College’s commitment to anti-tobacco initiatives, while Prof. Seema Hakim stressed the need for launching a massive drive for public awareness for prevention of tobacco usage.
Dr. Neha Agrawa, Chairperson, Department of Periodontia and Community Dentistry said that the department remains committed to its mission of promoting public health and combating the detrimental effects of tobacco through continuous education and community engagement.
Dr. Syed Amaan Ali managed, coordinated and laid out the action plan for the week-long no-tobacco awareness programme.
