Apeejay School International runs awareness programme on e-waste hazards

South Delhi : Apeejay School International (ASI), South Delhi, celebrated International Mother Earth Day this year in collaboration with CEREBRA integrated Technology, a waste management company. The event was organised to spread awareness about e-waste.

E-waste or electronic waste refers to discarded electrical and electronic devices. The massive expansion of technology and its increasing consumption has resulted in a large amount of e-waste.  Electronic scrap components contain potentially harmful chemicals like lead, cadmium, beryllium, etc, which makes the process of recycling and disposal pose health risks to workers.

On Earth Day, the students of Apeejay pledged to reduce, reused, and recycle e-waste and be mindful of how they dispose of electronic items. To tackle the problem, the young learners also planned to use e-waste disposal bins at school.

“ASI takes an action-oriented approach towards solutions for e-waste disposal by collaborating with industry experts CEREBRA integrated technology Ltd. Urban Mining has started at ASI as the initial commitment to building a sustainable environment through the collection of electronic products which are no longer in use. We are doing our part of service for the environment; we invite all to join hands with us in this cause,” said Purshottam Dutt Vashist, Apeejay School International, South Delhi.

Apeejay School International has been instilling a great civic sense as well as experiential and research-based learning approach amongst its students through various community involvement programmes. In the past, its students worked on women’s sanitary health, warm cloth distribution during winters, educating the underprivileged and no-food wastage campaigns, among others.

The United Nations designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day in 2009 to raise awareness about environmental issues and the need for a sustainable world. “For this International Mother Earth Day, let’s remind ourselves – more than ever – that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth,” mentioned the official website.
