Appointment of Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Indonesia)

Monash University has announced the appointment of Professor Matthew Nicholson as Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Indonesia), succeeding the foundation Pro-Vice Chancellor and President (Indonesia) of Monash University, Indonesia, Professor Andrew MacIntyre, who will retire early next year. Professor Nicholson will commence in the role on Monday 19 February 2024.

In his new role, Professor Nicholson will work closely with key University and external stakeholders to develop the Monash University, Indonesia campus’ growing reputation as a leading postgraduate education provider in the Southeast Asia region.

Professor Nicholson joined Monash University, Malaysia in April 2021 as Vice-President (Research and Development), successfully leading the portfolio by creating and implementing a vision for excellence in areas including graduate student mobility, supervisor training and development, industry engagement, and the governance and management of research infrastructure in Malaysia.

Between July 2022 and May 2023, Professor Nicholson held the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer, Monash University, Malaysia, and Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Malaysia), Monash University Australia. During this period, he provided strategic and visionary leadership of Monash University, Malaysia following the departure of Professor Andrew Walker until the commencement of Professor Dato’ Adeeba Kamarulzaman.

Professor Nicholson is currently Senior Vice-President (Research and Operations), Monash University, Malaysia, where he oversees the operational leadership of the Malaysia campus and provides strategic guidance and advice to all staff and University-wide committees in research, education and student-related matters. He also leads the Research and Development portfolio to maintain and grow its reputation as the University’s hub for world-class research excellence in Southeast Asia.
