Aston University observes International Women’s Day

An annual Aston University conference was dedicated to International Women’s Day in March this year.

The Innovation Women Conference focuses on inspiring more women and girls to enter the innovation and technology fields.

The event was also a learning and networking opportunity, designed by women for women, where attendees had the chance to learn from other successful like-minded women in business and science.

The conference featured speakers who shared stories about events in their lives which encouraged them to follow their dreams.

It was organised by the University’s Advanced Prototyping Facility department and was hosted by Debbie Assinder of Enterprise Nation and Naomi Nash, head of community and collaboration, Birmingham Tech.

The event held on 8 March was opened Professor Stephen Garrett, pro-vice-chancellor and executive dean of the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He said:

“I was delighted to help celebrate women’s achievements in innovation and technology across the West Midlands. Aston University is rightly proud of its continued success in bringing together academics, students, entrepreneurs and business leaders, and this was another great example of that tradition.

“My opening remarks reflected not only on the need to attract more female students into STEM subjects, but also to retain them at every decision point in their educational journey. We see noticeably different demographics at the MSc and PhD levels and addressing this is a key task to ensure the talent pipeline across our region”
