Aston University starts novel course to help upskill design and construction sectors
Aston University is offering a new professional course to help upskill the design and construction sectors.
Building Information Modelling (BIM) Specialist is aimed at both professionals and recent graduates with experience of building design, construction and consultancy.
BIM allows architects, engineers, real estate developers, contractors, manufacturers and other construction professionals to plan, design, and construct a structure or building within a 3D model. This covers the buildings and infrastructure lifecycle, from initial briefing to operation and ultimately to disposal or reuse.
The course is the first UK’s first Level 7 credit bearing BIM course which means students will get 15 academic credits which can contribute towards a relevant postgraduate qualification.
Students will be taught vital, sector-relevant software skills such as Autodesk Revit and Navisworks Manage and the current BIM ISO 19650 standards, processes and technologies.
The course is led by Dr Kenneth Park who is a reader in construction management and engineering within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and is a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building, UK (FCIOB).
He said: “As there is an increased effort to reduce waste in the construction industry, BIM is becoming an increasingly important tool for professionals in the sector.
“It allows for collaboration, addressing supply chain inefficiencies, clashes and reworking, creating a more sustainable and efficient construction process throughout the project lifecycle.”
