Awareness programmes held to mark the world cancer day

 

ALIGARH  : ALIGARH February 4: Dr Javith Hasan, Dr M Talha Khurshid and Dr. Anukarsh Jain won the first, second and third pries respectively for their entries in story writing competition, while Dr Bushra Siddiqui, Dr. Ankita Singh and Dr. Devanshu Sharma won the first, second and third prizes for poetry writing and Dr. Ankita Pandey, Dr Sidra Asif and Dr. Palak Tiwari won the first, second and third prizes for their participation in the painting competition.

These events were organized by the Department of Radiotherapy, J N Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University to mark the World Cancer Day.

A quiz competition was also organized for the junior residents of the department. All participants were given a certificate for participation.

Addressing on this occasion, Prof Shahid A Siddiqui, Senior Consultant, Radiation Oncology and Principal, JNMC, highlighted the various factors responsible for the existing gap in cancer care in the country. He also suggested remedial measures that can help improve this gap.

Prof M Akram (Chairman, Department of Radiotherapy) laid emphasis on the use of evidence based medicine and spreading awareness in improving the referral system to address the issues prevalent in cancer care.

He said that keeping up with this year’s theme “Close The Care Gap”, the department organized various events, including literary and art competitions which were open to participants from across the country.

He added that an informative video documentary was also released by the department highlighting various challenges and obstacles hampering the cancer care in our health system. It incorporates views not only from subject experts but also from nursing staff, patients and their attendants, he added.

An awareness programme was held at the Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, Dr ZA Dental College underlining the “World Cancer Day”.

Prof R K Tewari (Principal, Dr Z A Dental College) informed that a Nukkad Natak (skit), focusing on the multiple ways to educate people regarding the ill effects of tobacco on health, was organized. Efforts were also made by using the electronic media to spread awareness regarding the signs and symptoms of oral cancer and ways to prevent the long term deleterious effects of tobacco consumption.

Pof Vivek Kumar Sharma (Chairperson, Department of Periodontics & Community Dentistry) along with senior faculty members supervised the awareness programme.
