Bhajan Sopori’s melodious ragas enthrall Suncity students

 

Gurgaon: A Gurgaon-based school organized a SPICMACAY programme with an aim to instill appreciation about Indian culture among students. On the occasion, a veteran instrumentalist, Pandit Bhajan Sopori gave a scintillating performance in Suncity School.

The audience sat glued to their seats as the entire auditorium came alive with enchanting ragas played by Pandit Sopori.

“Music has been my passion. It is a pleasure to perform before students of Suncity School,” he said.

Hailing from Sopore in Kashmir, Pandit Bhajan Sopori belongs to Sufiana gharana of Indian classical music. His first public performance was at a conference organised by Prayag Sangeet Samiti and the University of Allahabad when he was 10 years old. Tracing his lineage to generation of talented santoor players, Pandit Bhajan Sopori has several accolades to his credit. Sopori was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999 and the Padma Shri in 2004. He has also been honoured with the Baba Allaudin Khan Award and M N Mathur award for his contribution to Indian classical music. He has also been conferred with Jammu and Kashmir State lifetime achievement award.
