‘Bharat Meets India’ at film festival held at IGNCA
New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts is visualized as a centre encompassing the study of all the arts which lie within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure. Films are cultural documents and allow one to explore the different elements of one’s own culture such as its history, literature, folklore, art and music. Indira Gandhi National centre for the Arts with that objective in mind is holding a film festival from 19thto 22nd December in association with Saksham Trust and Delhi International Art Festival. The festival is curated by Ms. Savita Oberoi and the screenings are being held at Samvet auditorium, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Janpath, New Delhi.
The films screened at the event comprise of different themes and genre. On 19th December, two movies which were screened were Hichki, directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra and Stanley Ka Dabba, directed by Amol Gupte. The former is an inspiring story of a woman who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome and how she turns her biggest weakness into her strength and the later is about a school-teacher, who forces children to share their food with him, forbids one from entering the school until he brings his own Tiffin/Lunch-box. These both films were well received by the audience and especially the children present in the auditorium liked it a lot.
We are celebrating 75th year of Independence as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and keeping that in mind film like ‘Gandhi’ directed by Richard Attenborough was also screened on 20th December. It is a biographical film based on life of Mahatma Gandhi the leader of non- violent, non-cooperative Indian independence movement against the British Empire. This film gave the children and others to learn about different facets of ‘Gandhi, The Mahatma’. The other movie screened on 20th December was ‘Katt Katt Kad Kaddu’ is a children film directed by Jayashree Kanal. Popular Hindi children’s movie ‘Kat Kat Kat Kaddu’ is made in such a way that describe those crucial parts of the film that have very less or no audio clues, thereby allowing a visually challenged person to fully understand and enjoy the movie. Children of Jormal Periwal Memorial Senior Secondary School for the Blind were present at the event , one of the student Abhishek Chandra present at the screening said that ‘it’s very inspiring film and it understand the needs and sensibilities of students like us’. Manish Yadav, other student present at the event said that, “It’s a very good film and encourages me to work towards my dreams and passion and not merely keep looking for success and this film motivates me and teaches me that life is short and it should be lived with zest”. Mr. K. J. Kuriyan, Principal of the school said that, “the theme is beautiful and is excellent for the children”. Ms. Meena Dinesh, Special Educator at the school for more than 20 years said that, “Initiative like this encourage and motivate them in true manner. It is a super idea, and it understands their needs and encourage differently abled student. It gives inner motivation and an initiative like this goes a long way”.
On 21st December, the two films which will be screened will be Barfi, directed by Anurag Basu and ‘Karmati Coat’ directed by Ajay Karthik and on 22nd December the two films screened will be ‘Halo’directed by Santosh Sivan and ‘Taare Zameen Par’ directed by Aamir Khan.
