Bike rally held to mark the World No-tobacco Day
ALIGARH : The Aligarh Muslim University Registrar, Mr Mohammad Imran (IPS) today flagged off a bike rally of more than 100 students and staff to spread awareness against the consumption of tobacco, commemorating the World No-Tobacco Day.
Highlighting the theme of the year, “Protecting Children from Tobacco Industry Interference”, Mr Imran urged the students to keep away from using tobacco in any form and educate people, who are consuming tobacco, to shun it immediately to safeguard themselves from the ill effects of it, including the occurrence of cancer.
The rally was organized by the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Z.A. Dental College, in collaboration with the Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India.
Earlier, in his welcome speech, Dr Sarwar Hashmi, Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery said that the day is celebrated worldwide to promote the WHO resolution for controlling production and distribution of tobacco products in general public.
He said that consumption of tobacco among adults has already been a matter of concern for years, but its prevalence among adolescents over the last decade has caused a serious concern and a vigorous drive is the need of the hour to persuade youngsters to keep off from the tobacco products.
The officiating Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof Seema Hakim, Principal Nursing College Prof Farha Azmi, Principal, Dr Z.A. Dental College Prof R.K. Tewari and several faculty members participated in the drive.
