Bournemouth University delegation joins Research Excellence in Viet Nam at Vietnamese Embassy in London
A delegation from Bournemouth University joined a vibrant discussion on Research Excellence in Viet Nam, at an event hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy in London.
The seminar was organised by members of a current British Council Viet Nam Going Global project on Developing a Framework for Research Excellence in Viet Nam, and was attended by stakeholders from the UK and Viet Nam.
Hosted by Ambassador to Viet Nam Dr Nguyen Hoang Long, the seminar featured keynotes from leading experts in assessing research excellence in the UK, Professors Bruce Brown and Nachi Chockalingam, who are both acting as UK-based consultants on the project.

Professor Lee, of the University of Portsmouth, presented preliminary results from the project following a survey which examined the views of Vietnamese academics in developing an assessment framework for research and knowledge transfer.
Ambassador Long hailed the event as ‘historic’ and discussed the significant potential for collaboration in higher education between the UK and Viet Nam as the country develops its higher education system, and considers a system for measuring and assessing research excellence.
Dr Milena Bobeva, a Senior Principal Academic in Bournemouth University’s Business School, is involved in the project and spoke at the event. She said, “It was exciting to see so many people joining the event in person and online as the sessions have been very informative and inspirational.
“The follow-up discussions have been very helpful for the work on the British Council Going Global Partnerships project for supporting the development of a framework for assessment of research and knowledge transfer to support Vietnamese universities aspirations for excellence in these areas and positioning Viet Nam as a key player in the higher education landscape.”
Representatives from universities across the UK as well as the Quality Assurance Agency and Universities UK International attended the in-person event. Dr Tran Nam Tu, Deputy Director General, Department for Science, Technology and Environment, Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), Donna McGowan, Country Director British Council Viet Nam were among those participants who participants joined remotely from Viet Nam.
The project is being led by Professor Raymond Lee, Associate Dean Global Engagement at the University of Portsmouth, joined by Drs Milena Bobeva and Alastair Morrison from Bournemouth University in the UK, and Dr Bui Thi Ngoc Thuy from Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Prof Dr Nguyen Thi Hoai Nga from Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, and Dr Bui Dinh Tien from Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City in Viet Nam.
The UK members of the Advisory Board to the British Council UK-Viet Nam Higher Education Partnership Network will be visiting Viet Nam on 15-17 May to discuss future development plans and visit key partners.
