Brock University Launches Welcome Wagon Initiative to Foster Positive Community Connections in Student Neighborhoods
As Brock students settle into their off-campus accommodations, a team of volunteers is heading out to help them build positive relationships with their new communities.
On Saturday, Sept. 9, the University’s students, staff and local partners will visit more than 600 houses to distribute off-campus living and neighbourhood relations resources, speak with students and local residents, and answer questions related to living with students.
The resources highlight topics such as student housing, waste management, volunteering and responsible social gatherings. The volunteers will also distribute Brock’s Good Neighbour Guide, which shares information about neighbourhood relations and getting involved in the community.
Kristen Smith, Brock’s Manager of Off-Campus and Community Experience, said students are excited to be back at the University and are fortunate to have warm and inviting communities in Thorold and St. Catharines to welcome them to the region.
“We are so grateful for the local residents and businesses who welcome students each year and provide an amazing example of what it means to be a good neighbour in Niagara,” she said.
Joining the familiar faces from Brock during the door-to-door initiative will be representatives from the Niagara Region, the City of St. Catharines, the City of Thorold, Niagara Regional Police Service and bylaw enforcement officers who will be sharing additional information.
Smith said the team works together to ensure everyone they visit has access to the resources they need.
“I’m grateful for the participation and support from our community partners throughout the year for the role they play in safety and education for all community members,” she said.
In addition to the Welcome Wagon, students and other members of the Brock community will also be taking part in the University’s Brock Cares Day of Service on Sept. 9. During Brock’s largest volunteering day, students will spend time lending a helping hand in the community while learning about opportunities at Brock and across the region.
