Camp Google 2020 will give kids a virtual treat as they spend time at home
New Delhi The summer vacation this year has been quite different. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, physical distancing and restrictions to public movement have become a central part of our lives. Kids are having an unusual experience as schools are closed, classes have shifted online, and meeting friends or playing outdoors is prohibited. These lifestyle changes, though necessary, are having a profound effect on young minds.
To renew the joy and excitement among kids while they are at home, Google has announced ‘Camp Google 2020’, a special initiative for kids and their parents to engage in fun and learning experiences together. The program offers an array of activities that combine real-world projects with virtual learning experiences, helping kids acquire digital skills while having fun.
From crafting a wildlife story using Augmented Reality animals in Search to a virtual journey across the nation, exploring the rich craft and traditions on Google Arts and Culture platform, kids will experience a wide range of activities that will keep them engaged throughout their journey with Camp Google 2020. The kids will also be encouraged to learn about India’s natural resources and how to preserve them on Google Earth, and ultimately get introduced to the world of programming with Scratch. There will be something new and exciting to learn every day.
Over the course of two weeks, beginning July 1, there will be five assignments that kids can access on the Camp Google 2020 website, accompanied by a set of instructions that will answer “how-to” questions. Each of these assignments will also include elements that teach kids to stay safe online – guiding them to be good digital citizens. Kids can submit their assignments by July 20.
Google will also facilitate virtual sessions by leading experts in psychology to motivate children and give them something to aspire to in these times. And that’s not all — at the end of the camp, kids will stand a chance to win many exciting prizes, including the opportunity to attend a masterclass with the YouTubers themselves, having their prize-winning entries posted on Google India’s social handles, and getting the best entry from the storytelling segment published in our Read Along app.
With an exciting line-up of engaging assignments and activities, Google hopes to bring back the excitement of summer for kids and provide them with plenty of things to learn and do at home. Parents looking to take part in the activity will need to authorize their kids’ participation by enrolling their children using this link.
