CBM India at VISION 2020: The Right to Sight – INDIA National Conference Marking 20 Years of Advancing Eye Health in India

Ludhiana — Marking the 20th anniversary of the Indian chapter’s launch in 2004, this year’s VISION 2020: The Right to Sight – INDIA Annual Conference reaffirmed its mission of achieving an India free of avoidable blindness. As one of the founder members of VISION 2020, CBM India acknowledges the significant accomplishments achieved over the past two decades. Through the dedication of partners, including hospitals, NGOs, government agencies, and research institutions, VISION 2020 has brought the gift of sight to millions, empowered individuals, and transformed countless lives, even in the most remote and marginalized communities.

The theme for this year’s conference, “VISION 2020 to 2030: Insights and Path Ahead”, highlighted the importance of reflecting on past achievements while planning for the future. The 18th conference served as a platform to leverage the lessons of the past 20 years. Scientific tracks focused on synergies for collaboration, quality and sustainability, innovative outreach approaches, skill development, and knowledge sharing, aimed at stimulating crucial conversations and advancing eye health services. The conference also aimed to identify remaining challenges, uncover opportunities, and lay the groundwork for a future where comprehensive and high-quality eye care is accessible to all.

Dr. Sara Varughese, Managing Trustee of CBM India Trust, participated in the event and delivered an address on the evidence for community interventions to improve screening and uptake of cataract surgery. Commenting on the conference, she said, “Vision 2020 is an initiative that brought all major players in the eye care sector together towards the elimination of avoidable blindness. India has come a long way through these collaborative efforts. However, the work is far from over. We cannot afford to be complacent. Besides building on the strategies of the last 20 years, we need to look at new ways to reach those who still do not have access to quality eye care. CBM India, one of the founding members, is committed to staying at the forefront of this fight against avoidable blindness.”

CBM India has been actively involved with VISION 2020: The Right to Sight – INDIA as a founder member. In August 2023, they participated in the VISION 2020’s 17th Annual Conference. In March 2023, they co-organized a Karnataka State Eye Health Network Consultation that brought together various stakeholders to create an action plan to achieve universal eye health coverage in Karnataka.
