Celebration of World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

As part of global celebrations to World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a round table discussion on ‘Gender Equality in Culture and Creative Sector’ was organized by UNESCO Dhaka Office on 27 May 2019.

More than 15 participants including artists, cultural professionals, academia, NGOs, UN entity, together, shared the experiences and perspectives to promote gender equality in culture and creative sector in Bangladesh.

At the beginning of the round table discussion, an introduction of the 2005 Convention and the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development was presented to raise awareness of the values of cultural diversity and highlight the interface between the 2005 Convention and gender equality.

The discussion stressed the importance of gender equality in the culture and creative sector and examined the opportunities and barriers to eradicate the gender gap in the sectors. Furthermore, a track of thoughts, called for the integration of gender perspective in all cultural and creative measures to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, was introduced.

Gender equality is a significant priority for UNESCO’s work on heritage, creativity and cultural diversity. UNESCO Dhaka Office also places gender equality at the heart of all development practices and continues to foster both women and men’s freely access to cultural life.
