Central University of Punjab celebrated World Cancer Day by organising Expert Lecture and Nukkad Natak
Bathinda: Central University of Punjab celebrated World Cancer Day by organising an Expert Lecture and a Nukkad Natak. To mark this occasion, University’s NSS Cell under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari hosted an Invited Talk on ‘Cancer: A Global Challenge’. The Keynote Speaker of this session was Padam Shree Dr. Lalit Kumar, Professor, Medical Oncology AIIMS, New Delhi. Faculty & students of the University attended this lecture through online platform. In addition to this, a Nukkad Natak was organised at University Campus to spread awareness regarding this disease.
The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by NSS Coordinator Prof. Monisha Dhiman where she mentioned that World Cancer Day has been celebrated since 2000 to save millions of preventable deaths by raising awareness and education about Cancer. She added that this year’s theme for World Cancer Day is ‘I Am and I Will’.After this, Dr. Sabyasachi Senapati introduced the guest speaker.
While addressing the participants, Padma Shri Dr. Lalit Kumar mentioned that cancer is a non-communicable disease that has been turning out to be a global challenge due to constant increase in cancer patients every year. He informed that in the last 20 years, the major Cancer Registries of India has registered an increase in cancer cases related to Colon, Lung, Rectum, Breast, Ovary, Prostrate etc. and stressed in maximum cases successful treatment could be possible on the timely detection of this disease. He stated that major causes of cancer include smoking & tobacco consumption, unhealthy diet & sedentary lifestyle and exposure to Radiations, Virus & infections. He recommended fibre-rich healthy diet & regular exercise to stay fit and reduce cancer risk. During his lecture, Dr. Lalit also discussed various treatments and medicines which have proved effective in cancer treatment.
Dean Incharge Academics Prof. R.K. Wusirika complimented keynote speaker for delivering the scholarly lecture. He appealed scientists & researchers to work on collaborative research projects to find cost-effective better treatment methodologies to fight against cancer and to reduce its global impact. Post lecture, NSS Volunteers performed a Nukkud Natak at University Campus which was appreciated by all. Towards the end, Dr. Preeti Khetarpal delivered the formal vote of thanks.
