Central University of Punjab Celebrates Earth Day 2024 with Expert Lecture and Geological Exhibition

 

Bathinda : The Department of Geology, School of Environment and Earth Sciences, Central University of Punjab, organized a one-day program to commemorate “Earth Day” on April 22, 2024, with the theme “Planet Vs Plastics.” The initiative, held under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, featured a range of activities, including expert lectures, model presentations, poster displays, and a geological exhibition. The Chief Guest for the event was Prof. Arun Kumar, a Geology Professor from Manipur University.

The event aimed to highlight the importance of Earth and its resources in human life, raise awareness about the adverse impacts of plastic pollution on the planet, and inspire young individuals to minimize plastic consumption for environmental preservation. Over 250 participants, including students from Central University of Punjab and five schools in Bathinda district, attended the event.

The program began with a welcome address by Prof. K. N. Yogalakshmi, the Dean of the School of Environment and Earth Sciences, who emphasized the harmful effects of microplastics and single-use plastics on human health. Prof. J.K. Pattanaik elaborated on the event’s theme, emphasizing the role of human civilization in protecting the environment through sustainable lifestyle choices.

During the opening session, Chief Guest Prof. Arun Kumar highlighted that India generates 26,000 tonnes of plastic annually, indicating a significant challenge that will require sustained efforts over the next two decades to address. He stressed the need for effective strategies to combat this issue.

A highlight of the program was the model and poster presentations by students from several schools, all focusing on the theme of “Planet Vs Plastics.” Students from Central University of Punjab showcased a geological exhibition and poster displays advocating for sustainable lifestyle practices to preserve the planet for future generations, which received acclaim from attendees.

Prof. Kshetrimayum Krishnakanta Singh, Head of the Department of Geology, concluded the event with a closing speech and formal vote of thanks. Faculty, research scholars, and students from various university departments attended the event with enthusiasm.
