Central University of Punjab organized a Special Lecture & Panel Discussion on Career Opportunities in Earth Sciences

 

Bathinda : Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB) under the patronage of Vice Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari organized a special lecture and panel discussion on “Career opportunities in Earth Sciences”. The distinguished resource person of the event was the former Director General, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Shri Niteesh Kumar Dutta. The panelist comprises of Prof. H.C. Nainwal, HNB Garhwal University; Dr. Vikram Vishal, IIT Bombay; Dr. R. Annand, IIT-ISM, Dhanbad; Dr. Ranjan Deka, Director, Capstone Geo Consultant (India) Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad. The event was coordinated by the Department of Geology, in collaboration with Institutional Innovation Council, and Internship Centre for students/Short term placement in Startup, CUPB.

In the keynote address, Shri Niteesh Kumar Dutta shared his views regarding available career options for Earth Science students in different domains such as Academia, Govt. sector, Engineering Geology, Industries, Exploration, Mining, Geoinformatics etc. He also mentioned about the different sub- disciplines of Earth Science and explained their scope. He shared his vast working experience at GSI and encouraged students to become successful geoscientist in GSI. He enlightened students by rendering a list of job opportunities at various sectors and suggested key points of preparation for qualifying different national level exams.

Prof. H.C. Nainwal, HNB Garhwal University, emphasized that energy resource, climate change and its effect on environment has opened up various career opportunities in the field of Earth Sciences and youngsters need to focus on the same.

Dr. Vikram Vishal, IIT Bombay, discussed on changing trend in geoscience studies. He underlined that CO2 Sequestration and its sub surface storage, climatic anomalies, remote sensing and GIS in Agricultural planning, space mining, artificial intelligence and machine learning for oil industry, climate modelling are the emerging areas where the students can opt for their careers. He encouraged students to “Think global and act local”.

Dr. R. Annand, IIT-ISM, Dhanbad, elaborated on the use of recent geospatial technologies on various domains, environment friendly mineral exploration and mining, recycle of metals, data mining/big data using artificial intelligence, up skill through online courses, career in academia.

Dr. Ranjan Deka, Director, Capstone Geo Consultant (India) Pvt. Ltd., Hyderabad, mentioned about sustainable development, optimum use of resources, environment protection, skill availability and enhancement, workable knowledge on various domain of geoscience to cater the need of industry.

Program started with welcome address by Dr. Jitendra Kumar Pattanaik, HoD, Department of Geology. Prof. Monisha Dhiman, IIC, President extended formal greetings to the participants and guests. Dr. Kshetrimayum Krishnakanata, Dept. of Geology introduced the speaker and gave formal vote of thanks. Faculty, research scholars and students from different CUPB and institutions across the country virtually attended this programme.
