Central University of Tamil Nadu Empowers Local Communities Through Skill Training Programs under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan Scheme

Thiruvarur: The Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) is proud to announce its consistent participation in the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) scheme, a flagship program of the central government aimed at improving the livelihoods, sanitary conditions, and health of nearby villages through the adoption of Higher Education Institutions.
In line with the UBA’s objectives, Central University of Tamil Nadu has been actively engaged in training the local communities to enhance their livelihoods. One such program is the Training in Manufacturing of Coir Products, with a stipend provided by the Coir Board. Under this scheme, trainees receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 6000 throughout the duration of their training. The initiative particularly focuses on empowering women in the adopted villages surrounding CUTN.
CUTN has adopted nine villages as part of this outreach activity, including Neelakudi, Nagakudi, Karunaganallur, Thiyagarajapuram, Sakaramangalam, Pannaivalagam, Sengamedu, Adamangalam, and Etilur. Through skill-based programs, the college aims to uplift these communities and provide them with sustainable means of income generation.
Over the past four years, the program has successfully trained 200 women, and the recently completed 10th batch consisted of 20 trained individuals. These skilled women now sell their coir products in prominent local markets such as Myladuthurai, Thiruvarur, and Kumbakonam. The initiative not only enables economic independence but also promotes the rich cultural heritage of coir craftsmanship.
UBA initiatives are meticulously organised and executed by a team led by Prof. Velmurugan, who has played a pivotal role in implementing these programs successfully. The tenth batch of trainees completed their training on 14 July 2023, marking another milestone in the efforts of the Community College. The trainees were congratulated by Prof. R. Thirumurugan, the Registrar of Central University of Tamil Nadu, for their dedication and successful completion of the program.
The Central University of Tamil Nadu is committed to its social responsibility and endeavors to empower vulnerable sections of society through such outreach activities. The training programs conducted under the UBA scheme serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, promoting economic growth and social upliftment.
