Cheers to Swinburne’s 2023 Highly Cited Researchers for Their Achievement
Seven academics at Swinburne University of Technology have been named on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list for 2023.
These researchers are ranked in the top one per cent in the world in their fields by citations, and work across computer science, space science, engineering and social sciences. Three Swinburne researchers are named in two categories on the list.
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Professor Alan Duffy, said the researchers had demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research and congratulated them on their achievements.
“It is wonderful to see Swinburne researchers across a variety of fields being recognised for their global impact, particularly in how often their work is used by other researchers,” Professor Duffy said.
“For the individuals, this recognition from Clarivate celebrates not only their hard work during 2023 but also throughout the past decade.

Researchers on the 2023 list
Associate Professor Chenghua Sun has been cited for his cross-field research. His research focuses on catalyst design for clean energy and environment applications, particularly for ammonia synthesis at room temperature, efficient methane combustion and biomass conversion.
Associate Professor Ivo Labbe is an astrophysicist. His research interests span the formation of the first generations of galaxies, when the universe was in its infancy, their explosive build up through cosmic time, and their demise when star formation activity ground to a sudden halt.
Professor Jinjun Chen’s research spans cloud computing, distributed systems and algorithms, mobile computing, hardware security, system and network security, data security and protection, and software and application security.
Distinguished Professor Neville Owen is a health sciences researcher in Swinburne’s Centre for Urban Transitions and a senior scientist in the Physical Activity Laboratory at Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute. His research deals with preventing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer through understanding and influencing physical activity and sedentary behaviours.
Distinguished Professor Qing-Long Han is Swinburne’s Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Quality). He is an internationally recognised leader in Control Theory and Control Engineering. He is cited in both the computer science and engineering categories in 2023.
Dr Xianming Zhang has published over 100 fully-refereed journal articles and conference papers, including, most recently, on automated and electric vehicles. Dr Zhang is cited in two categories: computer science and engineering.
Dr Xiaohua (Jamie) Ge is a computer engineer with expertise in networked control systems, multi-agent systems and cyber-physical systems. In a practical sense, his research is applied to intelligent ground/surface/underwater vehicles, electric vehicles, connected automated vehicles and intelligent transportation systems. He is also cited in two categories: computer science and engineering.
Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers 2023
Since 2001, the Highly Cited Researchers list has identified global research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated exceptional influence, reflected through the publication of multiple papers frequently cited by their peers.
Clarivate draws its data from the published papers that rank in the top one per cent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index. Bibliometric experts and data scientists at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate do the data analysis to create the full list.
