CME on Oculoplasty and Ocular Oncology
ALIGARH : The Institute of Ophthalmology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University conducted a CME on Oculoplasty and Ocular Oncology.
The chief guest, Prof O P Ahuja (Senior ophthalmologist and former Director of the Institute) said that a revolution has occurred in the field of Oculoplasty and apart from the easy treatment of eye tumours, aesthetic surgery has also been added to the arena of ophthalmology. He said although cataract is the main cause of blindness in India, eye tumors are a rare disease in which the affected person’s ability to see gradually starts decreasing. Prof Ahuja said that it can be treated if diagnosed well on time.
In his presidential remarks, AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Mohammad Gulrez said that blindness is a major problem and about 12 million blind people live in India. He said that this problem is more serious in rural areas and especially in women. He urged eye doctors to visit the five villages adopted by the university, and play an active role in the treatment by conducting eye tests of the villagers.
Dr. Santosh G Honavar (Director, Centre for Sight, Hyderabad) talked about “Retinoblastoma”, the most common cancer of the eye in children. He stressed that timely detection and management can completely cure this cancer and can save lives and vision.
Dr. Md Shahid Alam (Head of Ocular Oncology, Sankara Netralaya, Kolkata) spoke on the cancerous conditions of the eyelids and described the management of tumors in detail.
Prof Veena Maheshwari (Dean, Faculty of Medicine) said that this CME is the need of the hour and it will help ophthalmologists go through an orientation exercise and efficiently treat eye tumour patients.
Director of the Institute, Professor AK Amitava said that due to non-diagnosis of eye tumor on time, the problem keeps aggravating. As its external sign, the pupils of the eyes start bulging out and a kind of lumps start appearing on the outer structure of eyes.
Organizing Secretary, Dr. Syed Wajahat Ali Rizvi presented his work on non-surgical management of a common cancer of the eyeball layer. He said that Oculoplasty surgery has been successfully carried out in JN Medical College for the last three years. He said about 80 cases of Mucormycosis were successfully treated during Covid pandemic.
