CME on ‘Research Writing and Methodology’

Aligarh : Resident doctors of the Department of Surgery, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) learned the skills to navigate the process of converting ideas in developing areas into publications in the two-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on ‘Research Writing and Methodology’ which concluded on December 21.

“One of the core purposes of surgeons and other doctors is to improve human life through the application and advancement of medical science. This can be done not only by treating patients in the clinical setting, but also by contributing to the fund of medical knowledge through innovative research that can lead to improved future therapies”, said Prof Afzal Anees (Chairman, Department of Surgery).

He was speaking on the need for learning research methodology in postgraduate residency.

Prof Somprakas Basu and Prof Farhanul Huda from the Department of Surgery, AIIMS Rishikesh provided the participants with an overview of contributing to scientific literature through peer-reviewed journals and demonstrated the changing pattern of practical exams to OSLER and Mini-cex.

They also spoke on the doctor-patient relationship for improving patient care.

Dr Subhashish Mishra (Consultant Oncologist, Brandon Regional Hospital, Florida, USA) shared tips on stress management during residency and spoke on the ‘Just-in-time teaching’ strategy that aims to promote the use of class time for more active learning.

Dr Tabassum Nawab (Department of Community Medicine) discussed the methods for searching scientific literature and shared steps to find relevant articles.

Dr Nafis Faizi (Department of Community Medicine) talked about the sample size comprising the number of patients for planned research calculation.
