CMEs for private Unani medical practitioners
Aligarh : Three Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes of the Department of Ilaj Bit Tadbeer, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College (AKTC), Faculty of Unani Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to guide private Unani medical practitioners for delivering efficacious, safe and cost effective healthcare solutions were held recently. The programme was sponsored by the Ministry of Ayush.
In the first CME at the Saidla conference room, the Chief Guest, Prof K C Singhal (Former Dean, Faculty of Medicine, J N Medical College, AMU) spoke on the use of herbal and conventional medicines.
“Awareness regarding interactions between herbal products and conventional medicines is increasing and the potential for herbal and conventional medicines interactions should always be considered. Therefore it is important that the patients should give the Unani medicine practitioner full details of all medicines being taken concurrently. Proper precautions and monitoring are required and, if necessary, treatment should be adapted to accommodate for potential herb and conventional drug interaction”, he stressed.
Guests of Honour, Prof S M Arif Zaidi (Former Dean, SUMER, Jamia Hamdard) and Prof M M H Siddiqui (Former Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine) urged the participants to use their prior training and experience as a foundation for new skills.
Prof F S Sherani (Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine) emphasized the need for these CMEs as Unani medicine is gaining traction in many countries.
Prof Mohd Anwar (Organizing Chairperson of the CME) delivered the welcome address and Prof Asia Sultana extended the vote of thanks.
Attending the second CME as the Chief Guest, Dr Hameeda Tariq said the since herbal medicine is gaining ground in different countries, it is high time for further developments in the Unani Medicine field.
“Unani regimental therapies need to be taken to all corners of the world”, she said while speaking on changing perspectives of health and medicine in the modern era.
The Guests of Honour, Prof Syed Maudood Ashraf (Former Dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine) and Prof M M H Siddiqui pointed out that that India has the largest number of Unani educational, research and health care institutions and Unani doctors can make use of the facilities in the Country to extend this system of medicine all across the world.

In the final CME, the Chief Guest, Prof S Shakir Jamil (Former DG, Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine—CCRUM) emphasized the significance and scope of Ilaj Bit Tadbeer (Regimental Therapy) to combat newer diseases.
“Ilaj Bit Tadbeer is a unique application of special techniques and physical methods of treatment to improve the constitution of the body by removing waste materials and improving the defense mechanism of the body. This uniqueness should be explored in the treatment of newer diseases”, he said.
The Guest of Honour, Prof Mohammad Akhtar Siddiqui (SUMER, Jamia Hamdard) spoke on ‘Cirrhosis of the Liver’.
In the presidential address, Prof M M H Siddiqui (Chairman, Department of Ilaj bit Tadbeer) stressed the need to bring conventional and traditional therapies into the mainstream.
Prof Mohd Anwar delivered the welcome address and Prof Asia Sultana extended the vote of thanks. Dr Abdul Aziz Khan conducted the programme.
In the valedictory function, the Chief Guest, Prof Raisurrahman (Former Advisor-Unani, Government of India) encouraged the participants to explore all possibilities of bringing Unani medicine in the mainstream.
Over 150 participants of the three CMEs were also provided with hands-on-training.
