Conference on Teaching Methodologies in interdisciplinary contexts and Mapping Sociolinguistic Diversity on May 14-16

 

Aligarh : The Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is organising a three-day International Conference on “Appropriate Teaching Methodologies in interdisciplinary contexts: Mapping Sociolinguistic Diversity”, at AMU, on May 14-16, in Hybrid mode. The conference, sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi will draw participants from India and abroad, belonging to different disciplines.

The inaugural session will be held on 14th May, at 9:30 am at the Conference Hall, Faculty of Social Sciences, AMU.

In the present era of globalization, changing economy, technological changes, cross-cultural interaction and developments in Sociolinguistics have made a great impact on teaching methodology in the classroom, relevant for both teaching content and language in interdisciplinary contexts.

The conference aims to develop critical thinking skills, unravel cultural-language and content interface, and provide recommendations for policy makers, textbook writers, material designers, administrators, and educators to incorporate necessary methodological changes to bridge learning gaps in diverse ESL settings and content based teaching in interdisciplinary contexts.

Prof. Suresh Canagarajah, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor, Pennsylvania State University will deliver the keynote address. Prof. Imtiaz Hasnain, Chair-Professor, MANUU, Prof. Shobha Satyanath, University of Delhi, Prof. Chris Anson, North California State University, Prof. M.E. Veda Sharan, EFLU, and Prof. Avinash Kumar Singh, NIEPA, New Delhi will deliver plenary talks.

Professor Dhananjay Singh, Member Secretary, ICSSR, New Delhi, as the guest of honour and Mr. Tausifur Rahman, Director, Stepping Cloud Consulting Pvt. Ltd. will be sharing their views on the need to adopt appropriate teaching methodologies for better classroom teaching.

Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of English and Organising Secretary said “blending Sociolinguistics with other fields like Anthropology, Psychology, and Education etc. to provide a comprehensive understanding of Language use in diverse social contexts, is a great way to study in interdisciplinary contexts”.

Emphasizing the importance of appropriate teaching methodologies in the face of interdisciplinary and diverse local contexts, Conference Convenor, Prof. Raashid Nehal, Department of English stated that the needs of learners from diverse sociolinguistic backgrounds can’t be ignored.

Meanwhile, a pre-conference meeting with the research scholars of the Department of English was convened by Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairperson of the Department.

Prof. Raashid Nehal briefed the students about the conference and encouraged them to proactively participate in the different sessions of the conference.

Prof. Jawed S. Ahmed, Dr. Md. Sajidul Islam and Dr. Kishwar Zafir were also present in the meeting.
